The thermal cracking resistance of cast iron rolls, generally speaking, strength and thermal cracking resistance are the main requirements for rough rolls; the weight of the work rolls of the small 20-roll mill is only about 100g, while the weight of the back-up rolls of the wide and thick plate mill exceeds 200 tons . When selecting rolls, the main material for safety bearings (cast iron, cast steel or forged steel of various grades) should be selected according to the basic strength requirements of the rolling mill for the rolls. Cast iron rolls have high hardness and high finishing roll speeds. The final rolled product has a certain surface quality, the main requirements of which are hardness, wear resistance, etc. Then consider the wear resistance of cast iron rolls when using them.

The stress distribution of cast iron rolls along the roll body is uneven and constantly changing. The reason is not only the planning factor, but also the wear of the roll in use, the constant change of temperature and roll shape. In addition, rolling conditions are often not normal. Improper cooling of rolls after use can also be damaged by thermal stress. Therefore, in addition to wear, the rollers often have various local hazards and surface hazards, such as cracks, breaks, falling off, indentations, etc. For a good roll, its performance indicators such as strength and wear resistance should have a good match. This is not only durable under normal rolling conditions, but also less harmful under some abnormal rolling conditions. Therefore, when manufacturing rolls, strictly control the metallurgical quality of the rolls or supplement external measures to enhance the bearing capacity of the rolls.

Cast iron rolls are necessary to prevent the formation of pearlite during cooling after casting. The long life of roll chilled cast iron suitable for rolling mill stands is due to the fact that its microstructure exhibits, as of date, a coordinated scheme of die wear resistance, anti-sticking, and unstable propagation of graphite-induced microcracks. It can be seen that graphite acts as a lubricant on the contact surface of the roll or rolling strip, which reduces the stress concentration at the end of the micro-crack and reduces its diffusion speed. Some notable developments have been implemented in the line/process of hot strip mill end stand rolls. Materials based on the same concept, typically chilled cast iron, can be used. This involves the addition of alloying elements to form hard secondary phase particles that contain only dispersed fine carbides.
